We Are Building and Equipping a New Gymnasium in Zimbabwe

Stage One is Completed

and onto Stage Two

  • Drastic Gymnastics is a club that has 7 full time coaches, which teach 3 main disciplines and have been teaching
the children of Harare for over 10 years now under the club name.

  • We have been given notice to leave our current venue within 90 days.

  • This comes as a shocking blow for us and our community, as loosing this building will signify the closure of the last equipped artistic gymnastics gymnasium in Zimbabwe

  • So as the head coach and founder, I have taken on the task of building a new gymnasium that is designed for artistic gymnastics and is fully equipped with a pit and all training aids and equipment.

  • While the new gym's main function is Artistic Gymnastics it has been designed so it can also be used by Rhythmic, Trampolining and Aerobic gymnastics and have a full pre school and early development section as none of these disciplines have a permanent venue in Zimbabwe.

  • With Drastic Gymnastics being one of the leading clubs in Zimbabwe we are one of the main channels for those who go on to represent the country and we are involved in the bulk of the grassroots and development of gymnastics in Harare,
so this building will help more then just the current group of gymnasts. It will help gymnastics grow.

We already have the land in place for the gymnasium , all we need now is a floor under our feet and a roof over our heads
and the club will be back to coaching all the various levels and disciplines of gymnastics

Why are we Building a new Gymnasium in Zimbabwe and Why you should be a part of It

I have seen the affect gymnastics has had on the young individuals of Zimbabwe and how it has enabled them to change
the direction of their lives no matter what back ground they are coming from or what is going on in our country at that time. Over the years I have been on a journey with many of the youths of Harare and it is incredible to be able to witness and support a young boy or girl rise from one of Harare’s many high density housing areas, and defy all the odds stacked against them. For them to then go on to become both a national champion and a nationals icon of hope and strength as they represent their nation.

This is why we are building a new centre, to be able to keep training these gymnasts and nurturing their dreams of success and greatness.

Through gymnastics we have seen children turn around their lives at school, teenagers stay off the streets and go onto college and university and individuals go on to be the bread winners of their families.

So we are more then just asking you to be part of building a building, we are offering you the unique opportunity to be part of these young individuals growth and reform, to be part of keeping the sport of gymnastics alive in Zimbabwe AND to have your name forever embossed on the building for all future generations of gymnasts to see as they arrive and leave the gymnasium each day.

What We Are Aiming to Build and How

With us now not having a gymnasium for the gymnasts and team members to train in we intend to break the project down into 4 stages to allow training to continue as quickly as possible with as little disruption as possible

Stage 1 – Will be to lay a concrete slab floor and erect the steel frame with a chromadex roof. The building will be imported from the Republic of South Africa, while the floor will be made with all local material and building staff ( this will give us a floor and a roof where we can start training again ! ) The cost of stage 1 = $62 000

Stage 2 – Will be to build in the side walls of the gym up to 3.2m in Brick and then cladding with a mixture of perspex ,
opal and IBR sheeting to allow for natural lighting to keep our electrical usage to a minimum. The cost of stage 2 = $29 000.

Stage 3 – Will be to build within the steel frame the reception, ablutions, a viewing gallery and changing rooms.
The cost of stage 3= $17 000

Stage 4 - Will be to fill the safety pit with foam that will be cast in Stage 1, purchase a full artistic floor as the club has been using a strip for the past 10 years, replace the apparatus mats as most of the ones the club uses are now over 15 years old and buy a new Set of Springboards, Uneven Bars, Parallel Bars and Pommel Horse .  The cost of stage 4 = $41 000

Once these four steps are complete the gymnasts of Harare will have a full artistic gymnastics gymnasium that they can train safely in.

The Long Term Impact of our Building

Firstly to have this level of building in Zimbabwe will raise the level of gymnastics in the country with the gymnasts being able to train and compete in a secure and safe environment.

On top of it all, this building is a legacy that will withstand the test of time, as it will be located centrally and will be accessible to all the future generations of gymnasts,  allowing them to excel and reach the highest levels of competition on a world stage, securing gymnastics as part of the future of sport in Zimbabwe.
